The more each of us understands the problem, the better prepared we can be.  Included here are some of the relevant facts from a recent study of vandalism in our community.

Background

Targets of Vandalism:

There are four main targets for vandalism of public facilities.  These are:

1. Schools
2. Leisure Facilities
3. Parks
4. Businesses

Types of Vandalism:

There are six major concerns.   Alcohol and Drug abuse is identified as a problem in and of itself and is often a contributing factor in the other five.

1. Broken Glass
2. Graffiti
3. Theft
4. Arson
5. Rowdyism
6. On-site alcohol / drug abuse

Cost to Community:

There are two “costs” to consider.

The first is the financial burden to the taxpayers and local businesses. Completely accurate records are not kept in all locations.  The following is a conservative estimation of the annual dollar amount if nothing “major” occurs:

• Approximately $300,000 per annum to School Distric 43.

• $100-125,000 per year to the Parks and Recreation Department of the City Port Coquitlam .

• $100-125,000 per year to the Leisure and Parks Department of the City of Coquitlam.

The other community cost to consider is the reduction in quality of life for citizens. Besides aesthetic concerns, there are fear, stress and nuisance issues that are brought on by vandalism.

The Vandalism Cycle is Predictable

Most vandalism takes place during weekend evenings between 10 am – 2 pm.

Vandalism is more likely to occur during specific times of the year.  Traditionally the worst times for vandalism are:

  • Halloween
  • Spring Weekends especially during the month of May and June. Most incidences take place between 10 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
  • Warm Nights in July, August and September
  • The last week of August before school starts
  • The first week of September when schools reopen
